At the turn of the twentieth century, several well-funded scientists and government-backed teams were racing to build the first powered, controlled aircraft, some with government grants worth many times the resources available to two bicycle shop owners from Dayton, Ohio named Orville and Wilbur Wright, who had no formal engineering degrees between them.
What the Wright brothers had instead was an obsessive, methodical approach to testing. They built their own wind tunnel to test over two hundred different wing shapes, correcting flawed aerodynamic data that other researchers of the era had been relying on, and treated control of an aircraft in flight — not just lift — as the central unsolved problem everyone else was underestimating.
They tested glider after glider on the windy dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, crashing repeatedly, refining their designs each time, keeping meticulous records of every flight's data rather than relying on intuition or guesswork the way some of their better-funded competitors did.
On December 17, 1903, their powered aircraft flew for twelve seconds, covering 120 feet, with Orville at the controls. It was a modest distance, but it was genuinely controlled, powered flight — an achievement the far better-resourced Smithsonian-backed effort, tested just days earlier, had failed to accomplish at all.
