Temple Grandin did not speak until she was nearly four years old and was diagnosed with autism at a time, in the early 1950s, when the condition was poorly understood and doctors recommended she be institutionalized, a suggestion her mother firmly rejected, choosing instead to work intensively with her at home with the help of a speech therapist.

As she grew older, Grandin discovered that she thought almost entirely in detailed visual images rather than words, a difference that made some conventional academic and social settings difficult, but which she gradually realized gave her an unusual ability to understand and predict how animals — who also don't process the world primarily through language — perceived their environments.

She pursued a career in animal science, eventually earning a doctorate, and used her distinct visual way of thinking to identify specific design flaws in livestock handling facilities that caused animals unnecessary fear and distress — flaws that engineers and ranchers without her particular perspective had consistently overlooked for years.

She went on to design humane livestock handling systems now used across a large share of the cattle industry in North America, and became one of the most prominent public advocates for understanding autism as a different way of processing the world rather than simply a deficit to be corrected.
