In 1962, a newly independent India had no space program, virtually no rocket technology of its own, and far more urgent priorities — poverty, food security, basic infrastructure — competing for every rupee of government funding. Vikram Sarabhai, a physicist, argued that space technology was not a luxury for a poor country but a tool that could directly serve it, through satellite-based communication, weather forecasting, and education.
He chose a small fishing village called Thumba, near Thiruvananthapuram, as the site for India's first rocket launching station, largely because its location near the magnetic equator made it scientifically ideal — even though it meant the local church had to be repurposed as an office and church-owned land had to be negotiated for, with scientists working out of the vicar's house in the earliest days.
Working with limited funding and equipment compared to the American and Soviet space programs of the era, Sarabhai's team launched India's first sounding rocket in 1963, reportedly transported to the site on a bicycle and assembled by hand, a stark contrast to the industrial-scale space infrastructure of the global superpowers.
Sarabhai died suddenly in 1971 at fifty-two, before India launched its first satellite, but the organization he built, the Indian Space Research Organisation, went on to become one of the most cost-efficient space programs in the world, eventually sending missions to the Moon and Mars on budgets a fraction of those used by other countries.
